Artist's Description

In 1850 Congress established a law granted settlers the "right" to settle Indian land in this area and resulted in a major conflict between the Indians and the white settlers. After an inital loss, the white settlers escaped to return with 70 armed men and subdued the tribe and established a settlement here. This park honors the people who settled and lost this land.
In many ways, the driftwood reminds me of the dead and fallen who struggled in this area.
